There are two basic categories that bathroom pipe repair they are leaks in the supply lines and problems in the drain pipes. The leaks in the supply line are more emergency oriented than a problem in the drain pipes. The problem in the drain pipes usually only has problems when the water is turned on where leaks in the supply line tend to continue until it is repaired.
The leak in the supply line means that somewhere in the supply line there is a leak which means one would need to determine where the leak is located before they are able to start a repair on it. Once the leak has been located one will need to know what type of piping is being used and what type of piping can be used to fix the leak.
The first step for someone that is trying to repair or replace water lines in the bathroom is to determine the type of piping they would need. There are several different types of piping that is available for the water lines in the bathroom. These piping types would include plastic, copper, galvanized iron pipe, and cast iron pipe. Normally one would not use cast iron piping for the bathroom water line for a couple of reasons the first being they are hard to cut thus making them harder to piece together. The second reason one would not use cast iron piping for the water lines in the bathroom is because they tend to develop leaks and also tends to rust through.In older homes one may find galvanized iron pipes for the water line these have some of the same problems as the cast iron piping as that it will rust and need to be replaced.
One sign that rust has built up within the piping is low water pressure.
Copper piping can be used for a bathroom water lines and it is important to understand the different grades of copper piping. The first grade we are going to look at is type M which is thin and usually inexpensive this is the type of piping that one would use for a do it yourself project. This is the type many people choose to repair bathroom water lines. The next grade up of the copper piping would be type L. This is a strong piping that is easily soldered. Many contractors use this for renovation projects when they need a bathroom water line. The last type of grade for the copper piping is the type K this is the heaviest thus it is not good for bathroom water lines.
Plastic piping has grown in popularity for bathroom water lines due to the fact that it is inexpensive as well as easy to use. One may need to do research in their area to determine if building codes will permit one to use plastic piping for bathroom water lines. Each area has specific regulations as to what can and cannot be used in a house in regards to building materials.
