Have you ever wondered where the word plumber came from? The beginning of this word is plumb which comes from the Latin word plumbum which means lead. When you look at the periodic table you will find that Pb is the symbol for lead so basically you can see that plumber is derived from lead. This made a lot better sense in the past when lead pipe was used for sewer lines and lines to the street. Therefore the only work that a plumber would do was on lead pipes.
When we get to modern plumbing, boy has things changed. Looking at a plumber that might serve an area such as Northern Cook County, McHenry County, and Lake County they are no longer working with just lead pipes. There are a number of different pipes that are out there that are in current use that plumbers have to know how to fix. When it comes to piping materials there are several that you should be aware of and what they are generally used for there are three types of pipes that you should be aware of in your home:
- Waste Line
- Water Supply
When looking at the plumbing waste lines for your home you will generally see three types of piping materials used:
- Cast Iron
- Chromed Based
The cast iron line appears to be a dull black color and has a mottled surface. The problem with this type of pipe material is that it is hard to cut and actually requires special tools to be able to cut it. Many people have started using PVC to replace the cast iron piping.
PVC stands for Poly Vinyl Chloride which is a rigid white plastic. This type of piping material is strong and resistant to chemicals. The PVC pipe is easy to cut for faster repairs. More and more people are using this type of material for the piping in their home.
The last type of plumbing waist line that we are going to look at is the chromed based. This piping material is generally used when people are going to see it. The chromed based piping has a more appealing look to it than the PVC or Cast Iron has.
While some of the piping material that we are looking at might not be what is commonly being used today it is still up to plumbers to know how to work on each of these pipe lines as well as how to replace them if needed.
