There are a number of subjects that we can cover when we are looking at plumbing contractors. We want to continue our tools section from a previous article. This is where we basically look at the tools your average plumber has and what they are used for. There are those out there that want to do their own plumbing which means it would be beneficial for them to be aware of the typical plumbing tools that they will need depending on the project that they are working on.
The first set of tools that we are going to look at are the valve tools that plumbing contractors use. The first tool we should look at is the delta valve tool which is simply a tool that is used to remove the springs and cups on a delta shower and tub valve. The next tool that we are going to look at would be the Furrell retriever which is a pair of tools that are generally used for pulling the ring off of a half inch copper. One of these tools is used for screwing on the angle stop while the other part loosens the nut. The next set of tools that we are going to look at is cartridge tools. There are some out there that are generally a learned tool. This means that the tool requires someone that has used the tool before to explain how it works and to let you know when you would use it. There are particular cartridges out there that are made for two lines, the hot line and the separated cold line. There are some out there that are used when these lines are combined. You should also be aware that there is a tool out there that pulls the cartridges out. You will want to make sure that you are familiar with this tool before using the cartridge.
The next group of tools that we are going to look at would be the wenches. Contract plumbers know that there are a number of wrenches out there due to the fact that there is no wrench that can do it all. The first wrench that we are going to look at would be the basin wrench which is used to reach behind a basin which in many cases is a tight fit and help to loosen or tighten nuts in that area. The next wrench that we are going to look at would be the basket strainer tool. This tool is used specifically to put strainers that will ultimately tighten jammed nits and tub shoes. The next wrench that we are going to look at should be familiar to a number of you and that would be the channel lock. The channel lock wrench come in a variety of sizes to ensure that you are able to get the perfect fit no matter what you are doing. You will find that plumbing contractors will use a plumber’s deep socket set to remove or install a faucet jam nuts and the faucet stem. These are just a few plumbers’ tools that some people might not have heard of before.
There are a number of tools that plumbing contractors use regularly that most people should have in their home. The first tool in this category that we are going to look at would be the tape measure. You will need to make sure that you are able to measure any piping that you might be cutting or even measure the space of the water heater to ensure that you do not get one that is too big for your home. There are a number of different jobs that you will need a tape measure for. The next tool that we are going to look at would be the multi-tip screw driver. No one likes to start a job with one screw driver then find that they need a different screwdriver half way through the project. You should have a multi-tip screwdriver that has a number of different heads that you are able to use. This will reduce the amount of time that you will be on the project as well as comes in handy when you are not able to go get a different screwdriver. You should always make sure that you have a reliable pair of eye goggles for safety. While there are a number of non-plumbing jobs that you will need this tool for, you will want to make sure that you are taking the much needed safety steps when you are working on your own plumbing. You should make sure that you have a caulk gun. Once again, this is a tool that you can use for a number of different around the house projects and you might need for your plumbing project as well. There are times when plumbing contractors will need a step ladder to reach some of the piping. Therefore, a step ladder is a common plumber’s tool that many people do not think about. There are many plumbers that use flies to smooth edges of piping that they might have cut to ensure a nice snug fit. Needle nose pliers are always handy to have around when you are not able to fit some of the other tools in an area.
When we are looking at plumbing contractors and their tools it would be useful to know what type of power tools they use. You should also be familiar with the different types of shop equipment that they have. The first tool that we are going to look at is the different types of saws. There are three basic saws that plumbing contractors use. You have the jig saw, reciprocating saw, and the circular say. While there are some out there that might think that a saw is a saw. You should understand that each of these saws have a different purpose and are used depending on the task that the plumber contractor might have. There are some plumbers out there that use a welder to combine old and new pipe. When you are working with piping, there are a number of tools that you will find which help with the task such as an angle grinder and an angle drill. Some of the other power tools and equipment that plumbers use would include items such as core drill, inspection camera, portable pipe stand, metal detector, garden hose, medium auger, and sewer auger. There are also a number of tools that plumbing contractor’s use that are consumable and need to be replaced as they use them. These would be tools such as Teflon tape, lead free solder, plumbers putty, pipe dope, 50/50 solder, sand cloth, nails, screws, copper strapping, flux, gasket material, and silicone. All of these tools are important in one way or another depending on the plumbing problem or project.
There are a number of different tools that we have yet to mention. Make sure that you are familiar with the various types of tools that are out there and make sure that you are comfortable using them. There are a number of ways in which you can make sure that you are comfortable using various type of tools. You will want to make sure that you know how each tool should be used. Practice with these tools. Those that are not comfortable with the tools that they are using are more likely to make a mistake and when you are working with plumbing that could result in a very costly mistake. IF you find that you are not familiar enough with a tool that you need in your plumbing project, take the time to call in a professional. This will allow you to be able to go through and see how the tool is used and ask any questions that you might have. You will then be able to see how the job should be completed so that if it happens again you know what to do.
