In the first article we looked at the various items that you will need to consider when you thinking about a tub and shower installation. There are several other considerations that you need to think about when you are installing a new bathtub or shower. You will want to make sure that you are familiar with the various types of tubs that are out on the market at this time. You will also want to make sure that you are familiar with the benefits and drawbacks to each type of tub that is out there.
Types of Tubs
You might be surprised at the various options that are out there for tubs and showers. The first thing we are going to look at is the different types of showers that are out there. This would include:
- Enameled Cast-Iron
- Enameled Steel
- Fiberglass / Plastic Composite
- Proprietary Composite
Each tub has benefits and dray backs and you will really need to take the time to determine which tub would best suit your needs.
The Acrylic tubs generally are available is a variety of different styles. You will find that they are relatively light weight and fade-resistant. These tubs have benefits such as they are well insulated and tend to hold heat well. The drawback to this type of tub is that it tends to show scratches. You are looking at middle to high range when looking at the pricing for this type of tub.
The enameled cast-iron tubs are able to come in a number of different colors and are durable. These tubs are able to hold heat as well. The drawback to this type of tub is that it is heavy and in many cases need to have additional structural support installed. These tubs are also one of the most expensive options that are out there.
The enameled steel is one of the least expensive tubs on the market but have a number of drawbacks such as they tend to chip rather easily, does not hold heat well, and can be slippery.
The tubs that are made from a fiberglass plastic mixture are generally light weight and available in a range of different colors. This type of tub is less expensive than other options that are out there as well.
The proprietary composite tubs generally have the benefits of a cast iron tub without the weight that is generally associated with the cast iron tubs.
Most of the tubs out there are able to be found in a wide range of colors and have a number of accessories that you can get with them. You will want to make sure that you are putting these costs into your budget to ensure that you have enough to complete your project.
